Sakaizawa Kuniyasu(1972–) has produced oil paintings whose major motif is “cloth” with creases or wimples consisting of many layers of oil colors. In a solo exhibition this time, his fourth at Kamakura Gallery, not only oil paintings will be exhibited but also works drawn by oil on paper as a latest series. Compared with his typical oil paintings covered all over in dark-colored oil that evoke a sense of peace and silence, the works on paper have some simple lines of bright colors that give a sense of rhythmic dancing. “People,” the artist says, “might think there is a big difference between oil paintings on canvas and works on paper but basically both works arise from the completely same process.” The theory underlying his works is that the structural base is always the same even though the outward appearance of each looks different. The important purpose of his new series is not what has changed rather, he is attempting to express what has been kept. Sakaizawa also has recently been trying his hand at producing oil paintings on canvas using yellow or dark red colors that have not appeared before. Some 20 of his works including oil on canvas, oil on paper and charcoal on paper will be on display.

境澤邦泰(さかいざわ くにやす)は、撓みや襞、微妙な明暗をまとう「布」をモチーフに、キャンバスに繰返し色を塗り重ねていく油彩画を継続して発表してきました。鎌倉画廊での過去3回の個展では油彩大作を中心に紹介してまいりましたが、今回の新作個展は作家が新たに取り組んでいる、紙に油彩で描かれた作品にも注目し構成しています。これまでに発表されてきた、画面をほぼ覆いながらも幾重もの絵具の層の向こう側に続くような奥行き感と静謐さを持つタブローに対し、白い紙の上で一切の余分なものをそぎ落とされたような線状の色が走り、踊るかのような軽やかささえ感じさせる作品群。これを「見た目はペインティング(タブロー)と隔たりがあるように見えるかもしれないが、基本的には全く同じ過程から生じた作品」と作家が話す基盤には、これまで逸れることなく意識し繰り返してきた下層の組立を紙の作品でも実践しており、上層の色やかたちの違いは外見的な判断の要素に過ぎないという理論があります。今展が初発表となる、いわば新シリーズは、作品の相貌がいかに変わったかではなく、その変化に関わらず、いったい何が変わっていないのか、維持されているものは何かを提示する試みと言えます。これら紙の作品とともに展示するタブローでは、長年制作し続けてきたブルーグレーの色彩から近年は朱や黄を帯びたものにも取り組み、また並行して制作を継続してきた木炭によるデッサンはその線に洗練をみせています。合わせて約20点の新作の様々な在りようとともに、作家が日々積み重ね、繰り返すことで構築してきた下層にこそ触れて頂きたい企画です。是非ご高覧下さい。
