Kamakura Gallery is pleased to announce the solo exhibition “Words Spoken by Animals, Creature” by Yanagisawa Noriko, which will be held from March 22 to May 17, 2025.
Yanagisawa Noriko (born in 1940 in Shizuoka) is one of Japan’s leading printmakers and painters. After completing her graduate studies in oil painting at Tokyo University of the Arts, he worked at a printmaking workshop in New York in the 1970s, establishing herself as an artist with an international perspective. Her works are known for their powerful expression of social issues and historical events through a unique lens, grounded in masterful printmaking techniques. In the 1990s, She stayed in London as an artist dispatched by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, and in the 2000s, she devoted herself to mentoring younger artists at Musashino Art University. She currently continues her work at her studio in Kakegawa, Shizuoka.
Yanagisawa Noriko’s works construct a unique worldview where reality and fantasy, abstraction and figuration intersect. Particularly, many of her works feature animals and nature as motifs, through which she expresses the folly of humanity and the sanctity of nature. The artist has created numerous works addressing serious issues faced by contemporary society, such as the Great East Japan Earthquake, the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, and the invasion of Ukraine. These works, often depicted through the lens of animals, question human responsibility and the state of society.
Her representative series, “Words Spoken by Animals,” was inspired by repeated visits to affected areas, including the abandoned cows in Fukushima’s evacuation zone and the resilient animals of Chernobyl. These works connect tragedies from distant places and times, presenting them as universal human challenges. For example, “Words spoken by animals Sea field I, II” alludes to the nuclear tests at Bikini Atoll, while “Words spoken by animals 72°90° N. lat.” abstractly portrays the aftermath of the invasion of Ukraine. These pieces depict the scars left on nature and animals by war and disaster, leaving a profound impression on viewers.
In recent years, Yanagisawa Noriko has been creating drawings using supports such as parchment and Japanese paper, applying color directly to the works. These new pieces, distinct from her prints, showcase a different texture and expressive power, reflecting the artist’s ongoing experimentation. For instance, “Grazing quietly in the meadow” features sheep, a motif tied to Islamic sacrificial rituals, and uses parchment. The work carries a message about community and the chain of life, blending historical perspectives with mythological elements to elevate contemporary issues into universal themes.
Yanagisawa Noriko’s works have received high acclaim both domestically and internationally. She has held solo exhibitions at institutions such as the Tikotin Museum of Japanese Art in Israel, the Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art, the Shanghai Peninsula Museum of Art, the National Museum of Art of Romania, and the Zhejiang Art Museum. Her works are also included in numerous public collections, including the Tokyo University of the Arts Museum, the Saitama Museum of Modern Art, the Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art, the Tikotin Museum of Japanese Art, and the Sackler Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution.
This exhibition will showcase a collection of works Yanagisawa Noriko has created over the past five years, with a particular focus on themes addressing the serious issues faced by contemporary society, such as the Great East Japan Earthquake, the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, and the invasion of Ukraine. Through the lens of “animals” and “nature,” the artist questions the relationships between humanity and the environment, war and peace.

この度、鎌倉画廊では2025年3月22日（土）から5月17日（土）まで柳澤紀子の個展「動物のことば ・ い の ち」を開催いたします。
柳澤紀子（1940年静岡県生まれ）は、日本を代表する版画家・画家の一人です。東京藝術大学大学院美術研究科油画専攻を修了後、1970年代にニューヨークのプリントメーキングワークショップで制作、国際的な視野を持った作家として活動を続けてきました。その作品は、確かな版画技術のうえに、社会問題や歴史的事象を独自の視点で表現する力強さで知られています。1990年代には文化庁派遣芸術家としてロンドンに滞在し、2000年代には武蔵野美術大学で後進の指導にも尽力しました。現在は静岡県掛川市のアトリエで制作を続けています。
柳澤の作品は、現実と幻想、抽象と具象が交錯する独自の世界観を構築しています。特に、動物や自然をモチーフにした作品が多く、それらを通じて人間の愚かさや自然の尊さを表現しています。作家は、東日本大震災やチェルノブイリ原発事故、ウクライナ侵攻など、現代社会が直面する深刻な問題をテーマにした作品を数多く手がけてきました。これらの作品は、動物たちの姿を通じて、人間の責任や社会の在り方を問いかけます。
柳澤の代表作である「動物のことば」シリーズは、現地に度々取材に行き、福島の避難区域で置き去りにされた牛たちや、チェルノブイリで逞しく生きる動物たちに着想を得たものです。これらの作品は、離れた場所や時代で起こった悲劇を結びつけ、人類共通の課題として提示します。例えば、《動物のことば海の庭 I, II》は、ビキニ環礁の核実験を暗示し、《動物のことば 北緯72°90°》は、ウクライナ侵攻後の状況を抽象的に表現しています。これらの作品は、戦争や災害によって傷ついた自然や動物たちの姿を描きながら、観る者に深い感銘を与えます。
近年、柳澤は羊皮紙や雁皮紙などの支持体を用い、作品に直接着彩するドローイングを手がけています。これらの新作は、版画とは異なる質感と表現力を備え、作家の新たな挑戦を示しています。例えば、《静かに草を食む》はイスラム教の祭礼で生贄として捧げられる羊をモチーフとした作品で、羊皮紙が使われています。作品には共同体や命の連鎖を考えるメッセージが込められており、作家は歴史的な視座と神話性を融合させ、現代社会の課題を普遍的なテーマとして昇華させます。
柳澤の作品は、国内外で高い評価を受けており、これまでにイスラエルのティコティン日本美術館、静岡県立美術館、上海半島美術館、ルーマニア国立美術館、浙江美術館などで個展を開催しています。また、多くのパブリックコレクションに作品が収蔵されており、東京藝術大学大学美術館、埼玉県立近代美術館、静岡県立美術館、ティコティン日本美術館、サークレーギャラリースミソニアンなどでその作品を見ることが出来ます。
本展では、柳澤紀子が過去5年間に取り組んだ作品群を展示します。特に、東日本大震災やチェルノブイリ原発事故、ウクライナ侵攻など、現代社会が直面する深刻な問題をテーマにした作品が中心です。作家は、これらの問題を「動物」や「自然」を通じて表現し、人間と環境、戦争と平和の関係を問いかけます。
