Statement
The Presence Born from the Accumulation of Time
Presence emerges as time accumulates layer upon layer — depth nurtured within objects, or carved out from them. I am drawn to the textures and stories that old things carry, worn by the passage of time, and it is this that drives my pursuit of expression. By applying gold leaf to copperplate prints and building up layer after layer, the pressed foil gradually lifts and separates, giving rise to a texture that seems to hold within it the weight of ages — a matière born of long accumulation.
Kamakura Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Tsubouchi Yoshiko, titled “The Presence Born from the Accumulation of Time.”
Born in Tokyo, Tsubouchi studied printmaking at Joshibi University of Art and Design before going on to study abroad at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava, Slovakia, where she trained under printmaker Dušan Kállay. Through her distinctive technique of combining gold leaf and hand-coloring with copperplate prints grounded in etching and aquatint, she has created a world of fantastical, lyrical beauty. Her works are held in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Kurobe City Art Museum, among others.
The central theme running through Tsubouchi’s work is “time.” By printing multiple plates in layers onto gold-leafed paper, the foil gradually peels and separates, generating complex textures that evoke surfaces weathered by the slow passage of time. Across these surfaces, symbolic motifs emerge — antique maps, ships, birds, keys — opening onto spaces imbued with narrative and a quietly contemplative sense of time. The subtle interplay of layered plates and gold leaf lends each work a distinctive depth and presence, inviting viewers to reflect on the traces that time leaves behind.
This exhibition brings together approximately twenty works, centered on pieces created in recent years and including new works. Tsubouchi’s prints — formed through delicate draftsmanship and richly worked surfaces — quietly assert the presence of things shaped by the accumulation of time. Her expression, where matter and time, memory and narrative intersect, draws our attention to the deeper currents of time that pass unnoticed in our everyday lives.

時間の集積から生まれる存在感
時間が刻々と重なり、物に「深み」が育まれたり、または削り出されたりしながら生まれて来る存在感。 わたしはそんな時間（とき）を経て来た古い物が纏う質感や物語に魅力を感じ表現を追求しています。 銅版画に金箔を施し、版を重ねる事により、押した箔が剥離して生まれてくる質感…そこにはまるで永い時間の集積があったかのようなマチエール（質感）を獲得することが出来るのです。
展覧会概要
鎌倉画廊では、銅版画家・坪内好子による個展「時間の集積から生まれる存在感」を開催いたします。
東京生まれの坪内は、女子美術大学で版画を学び、その後スロヴァキアのブラチスラヴァ美術アカデミーに留学し、版画家ドゥーシャン・カーライに師事しました。エッチングやアクアチントを基盤とした銅版画に金箔や手彩色を組み合わせる独自の技法により、幻想的で詩情に満ちた世界を創出してきました。作品はロサンゼルス・カウンティ美術館や黒部市美術館などに収蔵されています。
坪内の作品において中心となるテーマは「時間」です。金箔を押した紙に複数の版を重ねて刷ることで、箔が剥離しながら複雑な質感を生み出し、まるで長い時間の堆積によって風化したかのような表面を獲得します。その画面には、古地図や船、鳥、鍵など象徴的なモチーフが浮かび上がり、物語性と静謐な時間感覚を湛えた空間が広がります。幾層にも重なる版と金箔の微妙な変化は、作品に独特の深みと存在感をもたらし、観る者に「時間の痕跡」を想起させます。
本展では、近年制作された作品を中心に、新作を含む約20点を紹介します。繊細な線描と豊かなマチエールによって形成される坪内の版画は、時間の堆積によって生まれる物の存在感を静かに提示します。物質と時間、記憶と物語が交差するその表現は、私たちが日常の中で見過ごしている時間の深層に目を向けさせるでしょう。
