Kamakura Gallery is pleased to present “Water, Land, and Seed,” a solo exhibition by Shibata Toshio.
Born in Tokyo in 1949, Shibata Toshio completed his graduate studies in oil painting at Tokyo University of the Arts before pursuing photography in earnest in Belgium. After returning to Japan, he has gained international acclaim for his large-format camera works capturing landscapes featuring artificial structures such as dams, retaining walls, and infrastructure throughout Japan. From his early meticulous monochrome works, he expanded his expressive range to include color photography from the 2000s onward. His works are held in the collections of major museums both domestically and internationally, including the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art; and the Centre Pompidou.
This exhibition, “Water, Land, and Seed,” presents 35 works, including 24 previously unrevealed new pieces. While Shibata has long captured landscapes where water and human-made structures create unique compositions, he recently reflects that “the desire to more actively incorporate organic elements has been growing stronger.” This approach is based on the artist’s profound contemplation of Japan’s national characteristics—its mountainous terrain and frequent natural disasters such as floods and earthquakes—and how the wisdom and ingenuity that people have developed in response to this environment manifests in contemporary landscapes.
Through works ranging from contact prints (4x5 inches) to large-scale pieces measuring 120x150cm, visitors can experience Shibata’s new artistic territory. Plants that appeared as supporting elements in his monochrome works now assert their presence more clearly in his color photographs, presenting a fresh perspective on organic elements within landscapes.
Shibata’s photography creates a unique harmony by focusing on the interplay between natural forces and artificial structures. His refined vision and precise rendering through large-format cameras transform contemporary landscapes into mystical, abstract compositions—capturing the power and grace of water cascading through weirs and channels, and the transformation of mountain slopes into repetitive patterns through human intervention.
We invite you to witness this new development in Shibata’s long-standing landscape photography, driven by his foundational themes of “water” and “land,” and now “seed”—representing the germination of life and his growing interest in organic elements.

作家ステートメント
風景を描写する時、基本となる大地とそれを形作る水（雨、河川、海）について考える。
ユーラシア大陸の東に位置する島国で、温暖湿潤気候に属する日本は、台風や地震などに頻繁に見舞われる災害大国だ。
国土の80%近くが山地で占められており、限られたこの狭い土地で暮らす人々の知恵と工夫の歩みが、今の日本の風景となって現れている。
私は長い間、ダムや法面、インフラなど人が作った造形物を撮影してきた。
そこには直接的ではなくとも、水という存在が常にある。
モノクロームの写真では、植物はあまり目立つ存在ではなく、どちらかといえば脇役のような役割を担っている。
カラー写真に移行してからも基本的には同じ態度で被写体に向き合っているが、色という要素が加わることで、その存在がより明確になる。
このところ、そういった有機的なものをもっと積極的に取り込もうという気持ちが高まってきた。この意識の変化が自分の作品に新たな展開をもたらす、そんな予感がある。
展覧会概要
柴田敏雄は1949年東京に生まれ、東京芸術大学大学院で油画専攻修了後、ベルギーで写真を本格的に学びます。帰国後、日本各地のダムや法面、インフラといった人工構造物のある風景を大型カメラで撮影した作品で国際的に高く評価されてきました。初期の精緻なモノクローム作品から、2000年代以降はカラー作品へと表現の幅を広げます。東京国立近代美術館、ニューヨーク近代美術館、メトロポリタン美術館、ポンピドゥー・センターなど、国内外の美術館に作品が収蔵されています。
本展「Water, Land, and Seed」では、未発表の新作（24点）を含む35点を展示いたします。柴田は長年、水と人が作り出した造形物が織りなす風景を捉えてきましたが、近年は「有機的なものをもっと積極的に取り込もうという気持ちが高まってきた」と語ります。これは、日本の国土が持つ特性、すなわち山地が多く、水害や地震などの自然災害が頻繁に起こる環境の中で、人々が築き上げてきた知恵と工夫の歩みが現在の風景に現れているという作家自身の深い考察に基づいています。
コンタクトプリント（4x5インチ）から120x150cmの大型作品まで、多様なサイズの作品群を通して、柴田敏雄の新たな境地をご覧いただけます。モノクローム作品では脇役のように見えた植物が、カラー作品ではその存在感をより明確にし、風景における有機的な要素への新たな視点が提示されます。
柴田の写真は、自然の力と人工構造物のインタープレイに焦点を当てることで独自の調和を生み出します。水が堰や水路を流れ落ちる力強さや優雅さ、そして山肌が、人間の手が加わることで反復するパターンへと変化する様など、その研ぎ澄まされた視点と大型カメラによる精緻な描写は、現代の風景を神秘的な抽象的構図へと昇華させます。
柴田が長年向き合ってきた風景描写の根底にある「水」と「大地」、そして「種」、すなわち生命の萌芽や有機的なものへの関心の高まりがもたらす新たな展開を、是非この機会にご高覧ください。
